Sony Product Reviews

Sony VAIO® NW Series

Sony VAIO® NW Series

The Sony VAIO NW Series notebooks have a bundle of multimedia features, making them ideal for entertainment junkies’ on-the-move.

It is the ultimate laptop for movie addicts as the screen has been created using patented XBRITE-ECO™ LCD technology, giving it a much sharper display. The NW series offers users an optional Blu-ray disc drive, further enhancing the portable HD experience.

These petite notebooks are also energy efficient, with a “display off” button which enables you to turn off the screen and keep the machine running, conserving power and saving you time on booting up again.

One down side to these notebooks is that with so many great features they may take a lot of power to run. It is therefore disappointing that it takes approximately 2 hours 50 minutes to charge the PC to 100 per cent, quite a poor result considering the standard battery life of the model is only 4 hours.

A Sony VAIO NW Series is perfect for anyone who primarily uses their PC for entertainment, whether it is watching films or listening to music. It has a sufficient memory and hard drive capacity to complete everyday tasks and web surfing too.

Sony VAIO® JS Series

Sony VAIO® JS Series

With a shiny white plastic casing, large display and a lot of power, the Sony VAIO® JS Series is a beautiful machine with style to rival the iMac.

The JS is pretty well equipped in terms of hardware with its Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7200 processor and 3Gb RAM it is a fast machine. There is also large 500Gb 7200 RPM hard drive.

The 256Mb NVIDIA® GeForce® graphics card can competently handle media playback and so as long as you’re not expecting to play Crysis: Warhead on maximum settings, it is quite powerful.

The main positive about the JS is the 20.1 inch X-black LCD display. It gives you a sharp picture with its impressive 1680 x 1050 pixel resolution. However if it had the full 1080 pixel resolution it could make the most of the Blu-ray Disc™ drive upgrade.

It has the same drawbacks as most all-in-one desktops; you can’t upgrade it yourself and there are limited upgrades from Sony, plus if the screen breaks then that’s the end of your computer!

The JS is a sleek and powerful PC that makes a great home media centre. There are some flaws but these are common with most to all-in-ones; overall it’s a really good product.

Sony VAIO® LV Series

Sony VAIO® LV Series

This PC is an all-in-one entertainment system merging a desktop PC with a HD television.

It is easy to move from one room to another thanks to its elegant design which has no complicated connections, and comes with a useful remote control.

The LV Series desktop allows you to reap all the benefits of HD entertainment. Users can store up to 50Gb of multimedia information on one disc using the Blu-ray Disc™ Drive, and play or record CDs and DVDs in all formats.

Its HDMI port enables you to connect the screen to your home theatres and gaming consoles, and works by immobilizing the PC and keeping the HD screen active.

Dolby® speakers are built-in and make for a powerful surround sound experience. But despite its impressive sound system, the PC itself is very quiet as it has been completely designed for home use.

The LV Series does cost more than the average desktop but that is only because it is so much more than average.

It is the ideal home entertainment system and a great PC. To top it all off the minimalistic design will fit in with most homes, avoiding the PC eyesore syndrome you get with a lot of machines.

Sony Company Guide

Who is Sony?

Sony is one of the industry’s leading digital entertainment brands, employing approximately 170,000 people worldwide and offering a complete HD value chain with its electronics, music, pictures, game and online businesses.

What do they do?

Sony is a multinational conglomerate corporation based in Tokyo, Japan, and is a leading global innovator of audio, video, communications and information technology products for the consumer and professional markets.

When did they start?

The Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company), later to become Sony, was founded in 1946 by Masru Ibkua and Akio Morita.

During the Second World War the Japanese economy hit a downturn, but after it ended the company picked itself up and its creators decided to expand their business internationally.

The company was named the Sony Corporation in 1958 after the discovery that there was already a company called TTK. The first Sony branded product, a TR-55 transistor radio, went on sale a few years earlier in 1955.

The corporation has now grown into a well known global brand.

A brief history of Sony VAIO

A brief history of Sony VAIO

Why develop it?

VAIO is a sub-brand of Sony, created to represent their line of computer products. Its name is an acronym for Video Audio Integrated Operation, but in 2008 it was changed to Visual Audio Intelligence Organizer to celebrate the brand’s 10th anniversary.

Thought up by Timothy Hanley, the concept was a way of distinguishing products that use audio and video as well as being functional PC’s.

What is it?

Sony re-entered the computer market in 1996 and launched a new line of PCV desktops under the VAIO brand.

The famous VAIO logo is now plastered over netbooks, laptops, desktops and media centers.

Why is it so special?

VAIO PC’s were designed for entertainment, whether it is listening to music through Dolby® Sound Room® technology or watching a Blu-ray Disc™ on a X-black LCD screen.

Sony always has the environment in mind and try and produce PC’s that are energy efficient and innovative, using solid state drives and power saving technology.

Who is it for?

The Sony VAIO Series computers are for people who want a fully functionally laptop or desktop that can transform into an entertainment system at the touch of a button.
