What is red eye?

‘Red eye’ is the name given to the effect when a person’s pupils appear in red on a color photograph. It is a very common problem that has plagued amateur photographers for many years. The problem is caused by a mixture of low lighting and the incorrect positioning of the camera’s flash in proportion to its lens.

When a photograph is taken the flash occurs too quickly for the pupil to shut and so the light is reflected back and is captured by the camera. The light bounces off the back of the eye creating the red colour which is due to the blood in the choroid (which nourishes the back of the eye).

How to prevent red eye

If you can adjust your flash then try to give it as much distance as you can from the lens, or point it at an angle so that the light cannot not enter the pupil directly.
