Nero BackItUp & Burn

Nero BackItUp & Burn

Nero BackitUp enables you to safeguard all your vital data from the very worst technological accidents: viruses, accidents and sudden power surges – all of which can turn your laptop computer into little more than a pretty paperweight.

As more and more of our personal and private records are stored digitally, it makes good sense to make sure that it is adequately protected. Nero BackitUp saves data to a hard drive, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray disk, FTP, memory card and/or an online storage depositary.

This vast array of options allows you to save your data in multiple places – meaning that if one fails, then you’ll have copies elsewhere.

The software included NERO’s burning ROM, which is a robust industry standard package.

Once installed and up and running Nero BackitUp looks after all of these files without you having to do anything as it runs an automatic ‘update’ system. You can schedule these backups to happen whenever you want and there is also an email notification service.

What kind of products can I get?

Nero 9 Reloaded is their leading software package which let you to edit digital images, audio and video before burning or transferring them to just about any media you like. It also comes with complimentary back-up software.

In addition, there’s Nero Linux 4 technology which offer a number of the fantastic burning/ripping functions from Nero 9 for Linux users.

Nero BackItUp & Burn is a software package designed to protect every important piece of information that you own. It allows you to produce physical back-ups for hard drives, CD, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, FTP, memory card, and online storage. You can timetable regular back-ups, telling the software to synchronize files and folders and even restore missing data from damaged files.

Nero Move It allows you to quickly and easily transfer all video, music and photo formats to handheld or other portable devices, getting rid of all the hassle out of doing it for each one manually.

In summary, Nero Media Home 4 is a fantastic and highly useful piece of software that lets you easily stream media wirelessly throughout your house, from your PC to compatible devices such as your Xbox 360 or PS3.

What accessories does Nero have?

There is a wide range of different plug-ins that you can download directly from the Nero official site to improve your Nero Reloaded 9 package.

First of all, the Gracenote plug-in gives you recorded data for each audio file in your collection, including all song titles, album names, track number and album artwork for a total of over 80 million songs. The Blu-ray Disc Authoring plug-in let you edit high definition video then burn it to a Blu-ray Disc.

On top of all this, the DTS (Digital Theater System) supports the awesome DTS sound format, so whenever you use Nero for watching DVDs with DTS you can experience that cinema sound.

Who can use it?

All Nero software is completely optimized for Windows but they do not produce any Mac OS versions. On the other hand, they do provide a burning suite for the Linux platform users which is called – rather unsurprisingly – Nero Linux 4.

Guide to the Nero company

Guide to the Nero company

Can you tell me a bit about Nero?

Nero are a leading software company and one of the famous names in the technology sector. They specialize in liquid media technology, which means that they create software packages that allow customers to enjoy their data on whatever media platform they choose.

In simple language, this means that the majority of their software is geared towards streaming, ripping and burning CDs and DVDs or re-coding old files so that they can function on different devices.

What does Nero do?

Five separate products are produced by Nero in addition to a range of plug-ins that help to improve the software.. They are one of the key players in creating technology for the business market.

When was Nero founded?

They were started in the mid-1990s by Richard Lesser in the town of Karlsbad, Germany. They were originally called Ahead software they changed their name to reflect Nero Suite, their top CD burning software.

As this ‘burning’ software has become less important Nero has adapted. Nero now produces software packages that allow customers to easily transfer files across different file formats and data devices, to stream content around their homes and backup important data.

Nero’s Burning ROM is allegedly an historical pun on Nero, the Roman Emperor who supposedly ‘fiddled while Rome burned’ in AD 64.

How to burn a DVD

How to burn a DVD

What is DVD burning?

DVD burning simply means copying files/data. These might be music, writing, audio or video, to a blank DVD. If you want, you can also burn to a CD though these store much less information. On the other hand, Blu-ray will store more.

There are many different DVD formats but the most common are:
  • DVD-R – this can record up to 4.7Gb of data, at 16x speed. It can only be used once.
  • DVD-RW – this records up to 4.7Gb of data, at 6x speed and can be written over multiple times.
  • DVD+R – this records up to 4.7Gb of data, at 16x speed, one write only.
  • DVD+RW – this records up to 4.7Gb of data, at 16x speed, can be written over multiple times.

Eagle eyed readers will notice there’s almost no difference between the ‘dash’ and ‘plus’ DVD formats. It’s simply because two separate groups: the DVD Forum and DVD+RW alliance, manufacture the respective formats.

The Forum includes Sony, Toshiba and Phillips amongst other, while the DVD+RW Alliance include brands such as Dell, HP and Yamaha. Some like Sony are members of both.

What software do I need?

Two different Nero programs allow you to do burn a DVD. There is Nero 9 Reloaded, which includes all sorts of useful video, audio and photo editing features as well, and BackItUp & Burn which lets you back-up all your data.

How can I burn a DVD?

Burning a DVD is quite a simple process. First of all you have to check that your DVD is the right one for your drive. For example, you cannot burn a Blu Ray disk if you do not have a Blu Ray drive.

Once you have done this, all you have to do is to insert the disk and follow Nero’s command prompts which will effortlessly guide you through the process in a few short clicks of the mouse. Easy.

Blu-ray upgrade possible

Blu-ray upgrade possible

Rumors that a new blu-ray standard could soon be launched, pushing up disk capacity from 25Gb a layer to 33.4Gb a layer.

This means dual layer disks will be able to hold 66.8Gb of information, which is probably just about enough for the home 3D edition of Avatar.

Standards are controlled by the Blu-ray Disc Association and they are facing pressure from companies like Sony and Panasonic to develop the upgrade further.

Nero offers upgrade facility

Nero offers upgrade facility

Nero is now offering their customers an upgrade facility on their official website so that they don’t have to buy entirely new versions.

On the site, under the Online Shop tab, there is an option called Upgrade Center. Once that has been selected the customer can then enter the old Nero serial number to begin the process.

Paul M from Austria said: “I read about the features in Nero 9 and decided to upgrade. I love that I can watch TV on my PC with Nero 9. Fantastic!”
