Thu, Jul 8, 2010
Why do they always pick on the little guy? Rosie Khdir takes a look at all the scams and spam, surround the teen pop star that is Justin Bieber.
So Justin Bieber is off to North Korea?
So the latest new on the Bieber block is that he may have to play a concert in communist, North Korea! His rep quickly denied that he would be playing there and it subsequently sparked rumours that Justin Bieber hates Korea – the hate campaign ensues.
Bieber was the target of a viral campaign on a website that polled its users, asking them where they think Justin Bieber should play his next tour. Almost half a million votes sent him to North Korea.
Hoaxes and Scams
This is not the first instance where Bieber has become an online target. Below is a list of all rumours, hoaxes and scams relating to the poor boy:
- His YouTube videos have been used to redirect views to adult websites.
- Hackers installed pop-ups on his videos that informed fans he had died in a car crash.
- Images of him on the Last FM website were replaced with pornography.
- Rumours circulated that his mother was offered $50,000 to pose topless in Playboy magazine.
- He has been reported as being pregnant, a hermaphrodite and arrested for smoking weed – none of which were true I might add.
Classic hacker tricks
So why is Bieber such an easy target? It could be because young teens all over the globe are searching him on the web, following him on Twitter and gazing lovingly at his YouTube videos.
This amount of exposure makes him the ultimate target for hackers who often grab hold of the latest trends, knowing that unknowing fans will click on just about any link that bears his name.
If there any of you readers have “Bieber Fever” just be careful what you click on, and don’t always believe what you read.
